GWOPA and AECID organized a media breakfast in Madrid in the framework of World Water Day 2015 on Sustainable Development. The session highlighted the strategic partnership between the two entities to work toward the Human Right to Water and Sustainable Development.
The session featured a presentation by Mr Gonzalo Robles Orozco, Secretary General of the Spanish Cooperation Agency who reinforced the commitment of Spain to international cooperation in the water and sanitation sector through programmes such as GWOPA and the Spanish Water Fund.
Mr Faraj El-Awar (GWOPA/UN-Habitat) highlighted the important and active support of countries like Spain in increasing access to water and sanitation services globally. He commended the Spanish example and their continued commitment as we move towards the Post-2015 development agenda. Highlighting the essential role of water operators, Mr El-Awar stressed the need capacity development to achieve greater coverage in terms of access, quality and sustainability.
Questions from journalists touched on numerous topics from the role of the private sector in both Spanish Cooperation work and GWOPA, specific countries such as Haiti were support is most needed and the effect of urbanization on cooperation efforts. The media present was invited to continue the discussion during the next Global WOPs Congress that will take place in Barcelona in September, gathering both Spanish and international actors to discuss progress in the water and sanitation sector through WOPs.
