Latin America and Caribbean (WOP-LAC)

What is WOP-LAC?

The WOP-LAC programme was established as the Regional Platform of the Global Alliance (GWOPA) in October 2007, with the Inter-American Development Bank assuming the Secretariat and included within the "Water Initiative" launched by the Bank to support to the Millennium Development Goals related to water and sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean. 

As of August 2013, the Secretariat has be hosted by the Asociación Latinoamerican de Operadores de Agua y Saneamiento (ALOAS) and is supported by UN-Habitat. WOP-LAC is a not-for-profit organization that is financially sustainable owing to the various sources of funding it receives. By identifying the needs and strengths of its members, the Platform is working towards improving the water and sanitation sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.

WOP-LAC at work

 The programme is divided into three fields of operation 

  • Water and Sanitation Operators' Partnerships  
  • Promotion of good practice through capacity building and adhesion
  • Administration, management and promotion of the Platform

A Sub-Platform of WOP-LAC, Cari-WOP held its first Executive Committee meeting in Barbados in 2013 and a benchmarking session for Caribbean operators. Results from this meeting. The Secretariat of Cari-WOP is hosted jointly by the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association and CAWASA.
