Describe modes of capacity development in the WOP

April 2007
At the Manila Regional Wastewater Forum supported by USAID, IWK showcased best practices on managing and operating the SBR wastewater treatment system in Bandar Tun Razak, Malaysia. IWK also demonstrated practical field methods to sample and analyze wastewater system effluents. Since URENCO attended the Forum and also operates a SBR system in Halong, USAID helped link IWK and URENCO as twinning partners.

July 2007
In close consultation with URENCO, IWK and USAID developed a training needs assessment for operators at URENCO's Bai Chay wastewater treatment plant. The assessment included plant operations and maintenance, health and safety, treatment system optimization and sampling.

August 2007
Three IWK specialists trained 18 URENCO staff at Bai Chay plant, including key managers and operators, on determining and operating proper parameters for effective wastewater treatment and on ensuring adequate preventative maintenance on the treatment units. IWK helped complete the standard operating procedures for treatment unit processes, improved the operator's log book and daily checklist, and advised on equipment lubrication schedule.

April 2008
USAID and IWK signed a Letter of Intent to promote sustainable sanitation management in Asia, building on the past successes from the IWK-URENCO linkage. IWK agreed to host URENCO staff for a mini-training.
May 2008
Three URENCO staff participated in a mini-internship at a SBR plant operated by IWK near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The internship includes hands-on training on treatment process auditing and troubleshooting, influent and effluent sampling, data analysis and reporting, and health and safety measures.

October 2008
URENCO and IWK presented their twinning partnership at the IWA Sanitation Options Conference in Hanoi. At the event, URENCO highlighted a 25% increase in contaminant removal resulting from better system optimization practices suggested by IWK during the twinning partnership. URENCO also reported its plans to apply the O&M procedures co-developed by IWK for its second treatment plant.
